Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors

Overview

Brain and spinal tumors are abnormal growths in the tissues of the brain or spinal cord, classified as either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They can develop at any age and may arise from the brain or spinal cord cells or metastasize from other body parts.

Common Types of Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors

  • Gliomas
  • Chordomas
  • Meningiomas
  • Pituitary Tumors
  • Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors (PNETs)
  • Vascular Tumors
  • Secondary (metastatic) tumors

Common signs and symptoms

  • Headaches, often worse in the morning
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Personality changes (e.g., mood swings, irritability)
  • Personality shifts like mood swings, memory loss, or trouble concentrating
  • Seizures
  • Vision problems
  • Loss of coordination and balance
  • Back or neck pain, possibly radiating to limbs
  • Weakness or numbness in arms or legs
  • Difficulty walking or maintaining balance
  • Bladder and bowel dysfunction if the tumor compresses the spinal cord

Diagnostic tests and procedures

  • Physical and neurological exams to assess symptoms.
  • Imaging tests such as MRI scans to visualize tumors.
  • Possible biopsy to determine tumor type and characteristics.
  • Spinal tap in certain cases to check cerebrospinal fluid for cancer cells

Treatment options

Surgery

Often the first line of treatment to remove accessible tumors while protecting healthy tissue.

Radiation therapy

Uses targeted energy beams to kill remaining cancer cells, often after surgery.

Chemotherapy

Utilizes drugs to slow tumor growth or kill cancer cells.

Targeted therapy/Immunotherapy

Newer options for specific tumor types.

Medications

like steroids to reduce swelling and anticonvulsants for seizure management.

Rehabilitation

(physical, occupational therapy) to help regain function.

Prognosis

The prognosis for  brain and spinal cord tumors varies significantly based on factors such as tumor type, location, size, and the age at diagnosis, but early detection and effective treatment can lead to improved outcomes.
