Bone Marrow Aspiration (BMA) and Biopsy
Overview
Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy is a common and important procedure used to understand how your bone marrow, the part of your body that makes blood cells, is working. It helps us diagnose and monitor blood conditions like leukemia, anemia, and other bone marrow disorders.
We know it might sound a little intimidating, but it’s actually a quick, safe, and well-tolerated procedure done by experienced medical professionals. We’re here to make it as easy and comfortable for you as possible.
What to expect
Pre-Procedure Instructions
The medical team will thoroughly explain the procedure and address all your questions, followed by a physical exam and any necessary blood tests. Be sure to follow the fasting guidelines provided by your healthcare team. For emotional preparation, explain the process to your child in simple, reassuring terms, emphasizing that it’s a normal and important part of their treatment plan.
Procedure
Patients are usually given sedation to minimize discomfort during the procedure. You will lie on your side or stomach, exposing the area where the sample will be taken, usually from the hip bone.
- Aspiration: A small amount of liquid bone marrow is drawn out.
- Biopsy: A tiny piece of spongy marrow is also taken to see its structure.
Duration
The procedure usually takes about 20-30 minutes.
After the Procedure
You may feel a bit sore at the site for a day or two, like a bruise. This is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
- You can go home the same day and usually return to normal activities soon after.
- The sample is sent to the lab, where experts examine it closely to help plan or adjust your treatment.
- Refrain from bathing or showering for 24 hours.
- Monitor the site for excessive bleeding or signs of infection (redness, swelling).
- Avoid taking blood thinners for at least 24 hours unless directed otherwise.
