Hepatoblastoma

Overview

Hepatoblastoma is the most common type of liver cancer in children, primarily affecting those under the age of 3. It arises from immature liver cells (hepatoblasts) and can present as a solitary mass or multiple lesions within the liver.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Belly swelling and pain
  • Weight loss and poor appetite
  • Nausea and throwing-up
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes
  • Fever

Diagnostic tests and procedures

Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Test

Elevated levels of AFP in the blood are indicative of hepatoblastoma in many cases.

Imaging Studies

like Ultrasound, CT scan or MRI to assess tumor size, location, and possible metastasis.

Biopsy

A tissue sample is obtained from the tumor for histological examination to confirm diagnosis.

Treatment options

Surgical resection

The primary treatment involves complete removal of the tumor.

Chemotherapy

Often administered preoperatively to shrink tumors and postoperatively to eliminate residual disease.

Liver transplantation

Considered for patients with unresectable tumors or those with significant liver involvement.

Prognosis

Early diagnosis and complete surgical resection improve outcomes.
